At 1 Km there is the village of Mercatale with various shops
and services, and nearby Pierle, a hamlet with a medieval
castle originally owned by Casali family lords of Cortona,
and built to defend the valley from which it takes it’s
name. Destroyed by the Medici family it become a hideout for
outlaws and bandits. These fascinating and magnificent ruins
are well wart a visit.
At 20 Km one can visit Cortona, an ancient city of Etruscan
origin, with its important monuments and museums (Etruscan
and Diocesan) where one can admire many famous work of art
including an Etruscan bronze chandelier and pictures by Luca
Signorelli.
At 12 Km one can reach the Lake Trasimeno with many beaches
and a historic walk that takes you on the path of the famous
battle between the Romans and Hannibal that took place in
217 A.C.
One can also easily reach Perugia, Assisi with the splendid
cathedral dedicated to St. Francis with it’s wonderful
Giotto frescos, Firenze, the heart of the renaissance culture,
Siena and Arezzo where one can admire the beautiful frescos
by Piero della Francesca.
